POTS / OI
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome / Orthostatic Intolerance
Who will benefit from the program?
Our POTS/OI Service is suitable for those diagnosed POTS/OI. If you are unsure if you have POTS/OI our initial assessments can help gather valuable data via specialised testing that may assist your medical practitioner in investigating your symptoms.
Evidence-Based
Our approach to managing POTS/OI is based on recent scientific literature to ensure that you receive best possible care. We also work together with your GP, specialist, or other allied health practitioners.
Where to begin?
1 - Initial Assessment
In your first visit, we aim at providing better understanding of the nature of POTS/OI. We look at your medical history, exercise habits, medications, injuries, and how well you tolerate standing via specalised testing. We will provide guidance on other non-exercise based strategies that may help manage your symptoms. Our Accredited Exercise Physiologist will develop a plan to get you back to moving. When ready we will design a program that you can complete either at home, gym, or in our Small Group Sessions.
2 - Achievement of Baseline
After the initial assessment, the next goal is to achieve what we call as the “Asymptomatic Movement Baseline” (AMB). The AMB is a level of exertion (both physical and mental ) that does not cause post-exertional malaise or PEM. Achieving AMB is a critical step in finding a safe starting point and an appropriate pacing plan to avoid flare ups. It is important to note that this is NOT the same as graded exercise therapy.
3 - Monitoring
We check-in on your progress every 4 weeks to ensure that you are tracking well and that the following key points are addressed or achieved:
Identifying triggers
Implementing pacing strategies
optimising non-pharmacological strategies
Progression of exercise program at appropriate times
Troubleshooting issues stemming from challenges of daily life and temperature changes.
